Finding a Reputable Breeder

You want to locate a reputable Papillon breeder

First, join Papillon-L — BEFORE you buy a dog. The list provides an excellent way to learn more about the breed and communicate with breeders and Pap owners across the country.

The Papillon Club of America offers a directory to locate their member breeders throughout the U.S. and Canada. It can be obtained by contacting:

Robin Kost
PCA Corresponding Secretary
401 Farmington Road W
Accokeek, MD 20607
Email: information@papillonclub.org

You can also view the PCA Online Breeders Directory at: http://www.papillonclub.org

If you are considering adoption of a rescue Papillon, visit the Papillon Club of America (PCA) Rescue website: http://www.papillonclub.org/rescue or PapHaven Rescue at http://www.paphaven.org

Regardless of how you find a breeder, it is your responsibility to carefully screen them for ethical breeding and business practices. Here are some links to help you identify a responsible, knowledgeable breeder when you find one.

You should expect reputable breeders to willingly provide the following, as a MINIMUM:

  • Written sales agreement with health guarantee (and spay/neuter agreement for pets)
  • Care and feeding instructions
  • Vaccination, worming, health records
  • 5-generation pedigree and information about ancestors as needed
  • Personal references, including other Pap fanciers, their veterinarian, and buyers of their dogs
  • Responsibility for rehoming the dog if buyer dies or cannot keep the dog for any reason
  • Advice and support to the buyer for the lifetime of the dog

Feel free to ask breeders to provide references–and be prepared for them to ask the same of you. In fact, be glad when breeders insist on investigating you as though you were adopting a child! The ones that really care about the future of their puppies/dogs are the ones you will want to buy from.

Best regards,
